SHARP
Projects - Past, Present and Future
SHARP projects
fall broadly into three groups:
Educational Facilities
These are pursued by various means:
- The SHARP
Cardiovascular Risk Pack. A set of succinct regularly updated
guidelines to assist, in particular, primary care health teams to
identify and treat those at highest risk.
- Scientific Meetings
at which speakers who are the opinion leaders in their particular
field provide up to date evidence based information.
- Production of
literature.
- Production of
training videos.
The second type
of project is to take the message of the need for a healthy lifestyle
to the public in general.
The SHARP Bus
A mobile screening unit in the form of a highly visible double-decker
bus which has travelled throughout Scotland and screened more
than 20,000 people mainly at their place of work.
Another project was
the SHARP 'Eating for Life' video and accompanying workbook aimed at
secondary pupils. This was sent to al secondary schools in Scotland
and was incorporated into the Higher Still curriculum
The third type of
project involves SHARP not only initiating research into the prevention
of heart disease but also supporting the research of others. SHARP now
has the largest database of cardiovascular risk factors in the UK
and research using this database has great potential for furthering our
knowledge.
